With over 500 properties and about 200,000 hectares of land, the National Trust is the largest private landowner in the United Kingdom. Founded in the final years of the 19th century, the charity focuses on maintaining historical sites and the natural integrity of the land for over a century. To continue their duty working on behalf of the environment, the charity announced early last year their plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. One of their goals within the next nine years includes planting 20 million trees across the United Kingdom.
Early last year, the Trust announced that Raleigh, a British bicycle company, will further the charity's goal for carbon net-zero by donating both e-cargo and e-bikes. These new wheels will be allocated across the National Trust's eleven properties that span the UK. Hoping to increase their staff's connection with nature, the charity also hopes employees will find more time to exercise throughout the workday.
Additionally, since the spark of e-bikes has increased drastically within the past decade, the Trust hopes that visitors will see staff on e-bikes and ignite a conversation about current environmental issues.
Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom. European bicycle media noted that in 2019 there were a total of 101,362 imported e-bikes. Additionally, with The National Trust boasting more than 5.6 million members, there's no doubt e-cargo and e-bikes will continue to be a sought-after alternative to previous forms of transportation.
