Eurobike, an international trade show held annually, recently announced its plans to devote precious time and floor space to cargo bikes. The Cargo Area will have the “latest innovations, pioneers, and newcomers in the industry.” This new event is thanks to the sudden boom in e-bikes brought upon by the epidemic. In which some companies saw a doubling of sales and profits between 2019 and 2020.

Eurobike, which is held in Germany, is one of the countries that was affected by the significant bike boom. The German Bike Industry Association (ZIV) estimated that roughly 103,000 cargo bikes were sold in Germany in 2020 alone. A 35% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, experts working with the Confederation of the European Bike Industry (CONEBI) and Cycling Industries Europe (CIE) both believe that bicycle sales will reach 30 million annually by 2030. This is almost a 50% increase compared to the annual figure of 2019.

Although many people began bicycling again when there was a desire to stay socially distant, COVID-19 may not be the sole reason for the spike in bike sales. Since 2015, Europe has been launching initiatives to create friendlier modes of transportation in their “Declaration of cycling as a climate-friendly transport mode.” Going as far as offering citizens subsidies with their purchase of high-quality cargo bikes that can range from 2,000 to 10,000 euros. Additionally, many countries across the European Union have their means of encouraging their citizens to be more environmentally conscious.

Though the development of the Cargo Area at Eurobike is not a new development, it will undoubtedly have the best of the latest models. Project manager of Eurobike Dirk Heidrich states “we're delighted that the innovative cargo bike sector has found a home at Eurobike.” Eurobike will be held in Germany from September 1st to the 4th.
