Amid evolving ideas of how to best fight climate change, the United Kingdom debuted the first bike-sharing program featuring electric cargo bicycles. Furthermore, Cargo Bike Share, the program's name, will be featured in Stoke Newington, London Fields, and Shoreditch. Surprisingly, despite the UK's growing efforts to fight CO2 emissions, this is the first bike share being launched in the country.

There are expected to be eight e-bikes available at four various docking stations. Additionally, the bikes can carry a weight of up to 80 kilograms. This makes traveling with children, groceries, and other miscellaneous items easier when looking for an earth friendlier mode of transportation. Beryl chief executive, Phillip Ellis stated that “For last-mile deliveries or short journeys, e-cargo bikes are by far the best and often the most time-efficient way to move large or heavy items. By replacing vans, a network of e-cargo bikes has the potential to transform local areas making them safer and more pleasant to live and work in, due to the reduction in CO2 emissions, noise pollution, and stationary motor vehicles that take up valuable space on our streets.”

Cargo bikes have become widely recognized as a way to provide healthier alternatives of travel for both tourists and residents alike. The new program comes a little more than a month before the United Nations meet in Glasgow, United Kingdom, for the climate change conference COP26. Although the conference isn't for another five weeks, environmental policymakers are already striving to begin working towards a reduction in emissions. Islington Council's Executive Member for Environment and Transport, Cllr Rowena Champion, said: “We know that by taking steps to help residents and businesses lower their emissions, we can create a greener Islington and achieve net-zero carbon status by 2030, to help tackle the climate emergency.”
