At Eurobike 2024 in Frankfurt, Wheel Giant had the privilege of interviewing Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike Systems, as the company celebrated its 15th anniversary. Fleischer reflected on Bosch’s impressive journey, marked by technological advancements, a commitment to sustainability, and a vision for the future.

Bosch eBike Systems was founded in 2009 as a start-up within the Bosch group and launched its first product in 2011. “Since then, we have brought numerous innovations to the e-bike market," Fleischer shared enthusiastically. One significant milestone came in 2014 with the introduction of the Performance Line and Active Line systems, providing riders with 50Nm and 60Nm of torque, respectively, while being compatible with various hubs and derailleurs. In 2015, Bosch introduced the famed eShift electronic shifting system, enhancing both safety and comfort for cyclists.

Another groundbreaking achievement came with Bosch’s push into connectivity and smart systems. Fleischer highlighted the launch of the Nyon smart display, which integrates with an app to offer various features, and the introduction of ABS (anti-lock braking system) in 2018. “This year, our focus is on innovations like eShift, new riding modes, and features such as Range Control,” he added.

Expanding eShift Partnerships

Bosch’s eShift was first integrated into its Smart System last year with support from internal gear suppliers like Enviolo, Rohloff, and 3X3. This year, the company expanded its strategic partnerships, notably teaming up with Taiwan’s TRP (Tektro) to introduce the TRP E.A.S.I. A12 wireless automatic shifting system, designed specifically for e-MTB and e-Gravel bikes. eShift now automatically adjusts gears based on the rider's preset cadence, enhancing the riding experience. In addition to TRP, Bosch’s eShift now supports Shimano’s Nexus Di2 and Cues Di2 systems.

Connectivity Leading the Way

Bosch continues to lead the market in connected biking solutions. This year, they introduced the Eco+ riding mode, designed for seamless transitions between assisted and unassisted riding. By adding this mode to the eBike Flow app, riders can personalize their e-bike’s performance to suit their preferences. Bosch also integrated AI into its Range Control feature, which predicts battery consumption and estimates the remaining battery percentage upon reaching a destination.

The eBike Flow app has become a key milestone in the future of connected biking,” Fleischer said, emphasizing that the software connects all components, including the drive unit, battery, display, phone, and the rider, allowing for data sharing and interaction. With over one million users worldwide, the app provides personalized settings, navigation, and enhanced security features such as “eBike Lock” and “eBike Alarm” to protect against theft. The smart system also improves navigation through AI-based route planning and real-time battery management.

Commitment to Sustainability and the Circular Economy

Sustainability is a central pillar of Bosch’s strategy moving forward. Fleischer outlined three key sustainability goals: reducing carbon footprints, collaborating with suppliers to achieve carbon reductions, and advancing the circular economy. While cycling is already a sustainable mode of transport due to its low energy requirements and reduced CO2 emissions, Bosch is committed to further reducing the carbon footprint of its products throughout their lifecycle. This includes selecting eco-friendly materials, using green energy for production, and ensuring the recycling and refurbishment of e-bike components, particularly batteries. Bosch has established collection and recycling systems across Europe to manage used batteries responsibly.

Looking ahead, Fleischer affirmed Bosch’s dedication to sustainability and its ongoing use of AI and digital technologies to make products safer, smarter, and more user-friendly. As Bosch eBike Systems moves into its next 15 years, the company’s focus remains on pushing the boundaries of innovation while making the world a cleaner and greener place.
