President Donald Trump announced that starting March 4, tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will go into effect, and China will face an additional 10% tariff on the same date. This will bring the total U.S. tariff on Chinese imports to 20%.
According to CNBC, the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which had been paused for a month starting February 3, were expected to be reinstated. Trump clarified this in a Truth Social post, stating that the tariffs would take effect as scheduled. He cited the ongoing issue of illegal drug trafficking from Mexico and Canada as the reason for the tariffs, despite both countries' pledges to enhance border control efforts.
In addition to the tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, Trump also plans to impose global 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, effective March 12. On February 13, he signed a memorandum to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that levy duties on U.S. imports, targeting other unfair trade practices such as value-added taxes.
Trump emphasized that tariffs remain a key part of his second-term agenda, serving both as a revenue source and leverage in trade negotiations.
